Sufficient for Today

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:33-34 ESV)

A lot of our anxiety is based on this fear of God’s sufficiency today and concerns about tomorrow. This scripture is one of my favorite when times like this arise and I begin questioning what is going on in my life. I have a number of friends out of work right now and I know they are dealing with the same concerns.

But in the lines of scripture just before this there is an even greater description of how much God cares for us and cares about meeting our needs. This does not mean that you will get everything you desire, but that God’s sufficiency will sustain us through the roughest of times.

The problem is that we do not look at just today. We worry about tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. Our minds are often so consumed with the future that we completely miss the present.

Focus upon today. Maybe even focus on this moment. Allow God room for Him to display His sufficiency.
