Opening Up

12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[a]

14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:12-14 ESV)

Have you ever read a verse or section of scripture and thought, “I have no idea what that means”?

Granted, some elements of scripture are veiled and not to be revealed to us this side of heaven. But understanding scripture requires two things, the Holy Spirit and a volume of personal study. The Holy Spirit must be present in your life to provide understanding and discernment. The volume of personal study requires the reading of scripture, study of various translations and some old to New Testament cross referencing.

We are meant to learn and grow in our faith so that we can better understand and apply the concepts of scripture and God’s teaching. With these things the scriptures open up to us.

Reflect on: The Holy Spirit in your life and if you are doing an adequate amount of scriptural study so that they are opening up to you.
