39 Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it. (Matthew 10:39 ESV)
It is easy when reading scripture to gloss over a single line like our’s today without much thought. This is why when I read scripture I do not read large sections at a time. I may not make it through the Bible once per year as many do, but I seek more to make my yearly scriptural journey deeper. My way is not better or worse, just how I consume the content.
So when I come across a scripture like today’s in a chapter, especially the Gospels so rich with content, I have to pause. Today, I literally could have read this one line and stopped there. Understanding the content around every scripture is important, but this line can stand uniquely alone.
We are all seeking to find something in life, to make it have meaning. I have encountered so many who have chased dreams and success and found that both come up lacking. The corporate mogul who has nothing but their work asking if this is all there is. The world traveler who now finds home empty and the world a void. This is because when we chase dreams and success they tend to supplant God. But when we lose our lives to a deep faith life we truly begin to understand this is exactly where life is found.
There is nothing wrong with chasing dreams, but part (a large part) should be finding our lives in Christ so that those dreams have lasting value.
