Good Grief

10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. (2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV)

Good grief, I can’t see these words together and not think about Charlie Brown. He says it a lot. I think ‘ol Charlie had a lock on just how to use the words to express a plethora of emotions.

In our lives there are two types of grief: Godly and worldly. As our scripture says the first bring repentance from our sins, the second produces death. Worldly grief can seep into our bones and create all manner of health issues. And much like Charley Brown, worldly grief comes in a plethora of forms. The enemy likes nothing more than to keep us down and questioning God and everything about life.

Godly grief on the other hand is a remorseful grief that brings about repentance and growth. It is the type of grief that leaves one better off not worse. It is about creating change in our lives that improves both how we live and how we approach our faith life. It disarms the weapons of the enemy and the world and makes us stronger in our stand against them.

Rarely do we look at grief in a good way. But, good grief can be a good thing.
