Shades of Gray

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV)

Have you ever walked dark paths in your life? Some surely have, but when asked most people’s minds go to shades of gray. They look at their lives and do not see the utter darkness some have trodden before coming to Christ. But let me challenge that assumption. Scripture teaches us, and today’s emphasizes this, that there are only two aspects to our life and sin: darkness and light.

In Gods eyes there are no shades of gray, there is either darkness or light when it comes to sin. Our human minds want to go to a place where these shades make us better or worse. But God sees sin as sin. Be it a little white lie (see, we have to even color that) or complete depravity, God sees it the same way. That may be a harsh realization to some. We go through life with little things that we foster in our lives that keep us from the full glory of God’s plan for our lives because we color it in shades.

This is why scripture tells us to remove the plank from our eye before dealing with the splinter in our neighbors eye. We do not see them as the same thing. We have this little festering sin that is actually complete heart failure, yet we see it not in God’s way but in our human weakness and sugar coat our actions.

Consider what you may be viewing as shades of gray instead of what it really is in your life today.
