Set Me in a Broad Place

5 I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:5-6 NKJV)

In our scripture we see that the Lord answers us in our distress and fear, but why does it mention setting us in a broad place?

Think about the confining feeling of being in distress. We can feel like the walls are closing in on us, our fear puts a cage around us. We do not feel free in any way. Christ came to set us free and free we should be indeed. But we allow our minds to box us in and keep us burdened when we are told that Christ burden is light and His path easy.

When we are set in a broad place, the symbolism is that we are free. There are no boundaries and life opens up to us. Doesn’t a life in a free and open place sound good!? Of course it does, and that is exactly how our life in Christ should feel. But because we are slaves to sin we can feel our lives are constrained. It is only in the letting go of that sin and moving toward a life of true freedom in Christ we get out of our cages.

Reflect on: How unconfessed sin keeps you bound and how Christ can set you free and put you in a broad place.
