11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. (Hebrews 5:11 ESV)
We are, as a society, losing our ability to make significant enough change to right the course of our actions. We are allowing so much bad behavior to go unchecked that it is becoming our new norm. You may point to me and say, he is old, or he is stuck in the past, or that I simply do not understand. Maybe so, but my understanding is a byproduct of both what I was taught regarding right from wrong. What I learned about how one is expected to treat others and what scripture taught me. I make no apologies.
This is hard to explain because everyone has become dull of hearing.
They just want their selfish way and a life without responsibilities to anyone other than themselves.
The idea of one becoming dull of hearing from our scripture today is an apt analogy for what is happening in society. My hearing is not what it used to be, so I have two choices when someone is communicating with me if I am unclear on what was said. I can nod my head, not really hearing and go about my day oblivious to what I was told. Or, I can humbly ask them to repeat themselves so I may gain clarity and act accordingly.
My hearing loss is a physical thing from too many years on a motorcycle without hearing protection. Most people’s difficulty in hearing is simply a learned psychological trait. They do not want to hear, thus they do not listen. People want things to be a certain way and they just turn off to hearing anything different.
If we hope for society to change, we must be willing to listen.
