2 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. (Ephesians 2:1-2 CSB)
Our past, surely our present and future, have a dividing line – that time before we came to Christ and the time after. We should be able to look at either side of that dividing line and see how salvation has changed us. If we do not see this change then we must question our belief.
This is not to say be became totally pure after we were saved. We are still sinful human beings and we will slip into sinfulness as is our nature. But we at least know this and can work to combat these sins and our enemy who is the ruler spoken about in our scripture today. He does exist and his power is manifest daily upon the earth. But so too is God’s power that now lives within us and it is much stronger.
We do not want to be counted with the “willfully disobedient”. There is the spirit of our enemy working in our willfulness. We must combat this willful sin and make a conscious effort to make right choices.
I say all of this to help us be aware of exactly what we are dealing with, which is not just our own sinful and willful desires, but our enemy who will entice us away from right choices. So when we look upon the dividing line we can see, once we were saved, we have made a conscious choice to choose good over evil.
