Only Good For Today

19 If our hope in Christ is good for this life only and no more,[a] then we deserve more pity than anyone else in all the world. (1 Corinthians 15:19 GNT)

It is very easy to lose our eternal focus. We get caught up in lamenting the baggage from our past, the problems of the day or our fears over the future. If our hope in Christ were only good for today these things would truly be causes for concern.

I have gotten caught up of late in my past, present and future, so today’s scripture bears much weight for me.

When talking about faith once to someone who was not a believer, they posed this question, “But what if you are wrong?”

My response, “But what if I am right? If I am wrong I have lost nothing. But if I am right I have gained everything!”

It is easy to get caught up in today. I think this is especially true right now as the current state of the world has us living life very much one day at a time. In doing so we look at all our fears (I look at all my fears) and we do not live in grace or hope, we live in fear and anxiety. It is when we (and by we I am mostly talking to me today) remember that we are given grace for all eternity and not just today that can hope to break out of this thinking.

Yes, I write these devotionals in hope that God’s word might reach others. But far more often I write them trying to get His word to sink deeply enough and I hear Him loudly enough to help me in my life of faith.

Our faith, my faith, is not good only for today.
