15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,[a] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:15-16 ESV)
We have this freedom in Christ, which we should not take for granted. To be obedient we must become slaves to His grace and mercy. We cannot go on sinning simply because Christ grace abounds. In Romans, Paul belabors this point comparing it to the law which, by that time, was so important in Jewish lives. But it is no less important in our lives, if only to point out God’s grace and mercy all the more.
Bringing the mind and body under the control of Christ, and accepting the light yoke of obedience is no burden. However, the human condition is one of perpetual sin which is in conflict with obedience. We cannot do no good away from Christ. Our lives are like dirty rags. Thus, we must make ourselves slaves to obedience so that it can lead to righteousness.
Reflect on: Perpetual sin in your life. Be it something small or large, it is sin that obedience in Christ can control.
