My work requires that I look out months and often years ahead to plan for projects and keep our architecture at pace with business demands. I have also always been one to plan for the future even though I know the only time I really have is right now. The issue that arises with this is that it is easy to get caught up in what needs to happen or what might happen to the exclusion of what is happening.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew :34 NKJV)
We can get in a mode of not allowing life to be sufficient for the day. We stretch ourselves into concerns and planning and simply forget to live. We are caught up in what might be and missing on what is. This is where we can lose our focus and miss out on important personal growth or our relationships may start to suffer. This often hits our family relationships more than anything else. We stop spending time with those we love and find ourself distant and aloof. In this future focus we can even lose touch with ourselves and find that we don’t even know who we are any more. We have traded our now for a distant tomorrow.
Scripture, in many places, strives to keep our focus on the current. God knew that we would get so involved with life that we would forget Him. We would substitute the intimacy of a now relationship for the promise of tomorrow. When we train ourselves to focus more on now we do not lose focus on what is truly important or trade it for what may never happen. Life is for sure a balance on the here and now and what we need to plan for.
Reflect on: Are you allowing time for the day or just spending all your time focused on tomorrow?
