1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[a]shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:1-5 ESV)
Why do we continually desire to test the boundaries God sets for us? It is, to be sure, the human condition and one where sin is our desire over obedience. The enemy, the crafty one mentioned here in our scripture, is another reason. The father of lies will do everything he can to bring temptation to our door. However, the world is now our oyster and available to us through our electronic devices, bringing good and evil anytime we so desire.
We must know our place in God’s plan and be like sheepdogs, ever on guard and watch for the schemes of the enemy and the world. We can only do this through immersion in scripture and prayer. We are not strong enough alone, we need these things and the Spirit as our guide so that we do not willfully sin.
Reflect on: What conspires to drag you away from God and His plan? How can you combat this through scripture and prayer?
