Truly Personal

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 54:5-6 ESV)

Consider your life and your sins. Now consider the life and sin’s of everyone who has ever lived or will live. This is what Christ endured on the cross. We too often think about Christ death on the cross as simply the pain of death. But it was so much more than that.

Every time we sin we have added to the pain He felt on the cross. That, alone, should be enough to keep us from sin. However, like I said, we do not typically think of His death in this way. So while His death is important to us, for salvation, it is not personal to us until we begin to see our part in His suffering. And as verse 6 says, we have all gone astray, turned away from Him and laid on him all of our inequity.

Reflect on: The personal part you had in Christ suffering so that His sacrifice becomes something truly personal.
