1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected[b] by men,
a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d]grief;[e]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:1-3 ESV)
Many rejected Christ when He was on earth. Even His own people despised Him and did not see Him for who He was. They expected a strong ruler who would be a conqueror, not a lowly carpenters son who was willing to die for us.
This passage of scripture should make us all sad. To know that Christ died for our sins is a great debt indeed. But to know how He suffered even before that death is sad to read about. He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. How then can we not realize that we have a High Priest in Christ who can understand our emotions!?
Next time you are feeling down and alone, remember, Christ had those same emotions and He can empathize with how you feel. He, more importantly, is a friend to turn to in these times so that we can be lifted from our depression, sadness and feelings of begin alone.
He understands you far more than you realize.
