²⁴ “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24 ESV)

It is well known that building upon a strong foundation produces structures that are solid and can stand against a storm. But there is also a need, with some structures, to build in a bit of sway so that they do not break under great strain.

Within our lives our spiritual foundation must be rooted in the Rock, which is Christ and God’s Word. The Rock provides us the base we need to stand strong. God’s word provides us with clear instructions on just where He wants us to sway. This is not to say that He desires that we are wishy-washy about our faith. But that God built in allowances for how we are to live life that stays true to His word without breaking us or others.

So we need to hear these words and do them so we will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Coming to the saving grace of Christ we are given all we need through the Spirit who lives within us to be like the wise man. But, we must heed His guidance and allow Him to direct our paths.
