8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on. (1 Samuel 18:8-9 ESV)
Envy is the green eyed monster that comes and takes over from time to time in our lives if we are honest. Some have it worse than others, but the little critter can weed his way in and take us all over. It can come on suddenly or can burn under the skin for a time. Saul had both problems. It came on fast when David’s acclaim in war was greater, but then it simmered under Saul’s skin for years after.
Isn’t it better to be happy for others and to recognize that their path is not our path. God has provided enough in this world and beyond that we do not really have to compete. But this world is founded upon competition. In every facet of life there can be a form of competition that sets up and we are driven to be the best, have the best, do the best.
However, when we turn our minds eye toward God and are thankful for what He has given us that we can experience peace. The green eyed monster will never let us rest. He is a hard task master who will keep us wanting more and more. Only when we subject ourselves to God’s will, His plan and His provision we can truly be happy ourselves and happy for others.
