19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. (Romans 7:19-20 ESV)
We can find ourselves living a life that has this dark little corner that we continually go to. A little piece of our old life that we hold onto and do not let go of. The sin we do hangs out in this little dark corner of our lives and hangs on tight. We tell ourselves over and over again that we do not want to let this go on, but we do.
Paul was no stranger to this dark little corner. He knew that our nature was one of sin, but he also knew that Jesus paid for that sin and it was up to us, with God’s help, to overcome the darkness.
Persistent sin in our lives must be dealt with directly. Left alone it tends to grow like a mold on our hearts. It takes over more and more until it is something that we no longer have the power to control. It is here where we must turn fully to God and ask for forgiveness and truly repent. Meaning that our heart and our minds must turn full way from the sinful act and focus fully upon God. Only in this completeness can we triumph.
We may think we have the power to overcome, but alone we do not. Much like the trigger warning now being put on everything, we need to know our triggers and deal with them directly so that this dark little corner is bathed in God’s perfect light.
