3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)
We do not like to have our character tested through trials. However, trials are the thing that molds us more than any other.
The faith life is not something that we should enter into lightly. With humility and thanksgiving, yes. But, as scripture says, we must count the cost. Many want to think that being a servant to Christ will mean an easy life with many personal accolades from those looking at how we live. More likely it will mean that we are attacked for both our beliefs and our lifestyle. We may be seen as unbending and intolerant because we adhere to a moral standard the world wants us to forget even exist.
But this tribulation brings about perseverance and a proven character and our scripture tells us that these things will not disappoint. God will pour out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Through this we can find the peace that surpasses all understanding.
Building a proven character is something that will require a lifetime. We never stop working on our human nature and fighting the good fight, for Christ.
