Children of Wrath

1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body[a] and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (Ephesians 2:1-3 ESV)

Before we came to Christ and believed we were all children of wrath, just awaiting God’s righteous judgement to be poured out. Thank God, Christ came to save us from who we were.

This idea of being children of wrath does not sit well with many who are working to earn God’s approval. They have not realized that scripture is clear that our acts will never be good enough and we will be under God’s wrath until we accept Christ. Only His atoning blood can save us from God’s wrath.

Our scripture today also tells us why those who do not believe are subject to this wrath. Without Christ we follow the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, spirits at work in the sons of disobedience. Because unbelief is disobedience. And the power of these spirits is strong on the earth, but never stronger than God and His grace.

Thus, we need to fall down and the feet of the cross and give all praise to Christ who saves us from our disobedience and God’s wrath.
