19 A person with intense anger bears the penalty;
if you rescue him, you’ll have to do it again. (Proverbs 19:19 CSB)
Throughout the years I have had periods where I was more given to anger. Even now, when my anger is stirred up it can last for quite a while and I am no good to be around. Luckily, I do a better job keeping it a bay for the most part. But I know that it is there just waiting for an outlet, and I do not like that about myself.
I believe keeping oneself close to the scripture helps to curb any natural bent toward an angry nature. It also helps if your nature is more affable than angry, which luckily mine is. However, I have known some who our scripture well describes. Who have what seems to be a low level seething anger that readily surfaces.
There is a place for anger, scripture tells us this. However, when our anger becomes something that lies so shallowly under the surface we need to check our reasoning. Is it just because it is an unhealthy nature or something more suited to a righteous indignation about an injustice.
I think also this pertains to the level of happiness in our lives. When we are not experiencing regular feelings of happiness, anger is often just a short step away. Thus, we must focus upon that which brings lasting joy and in Christ we find this.
