Of His Pasture

7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
the sheep under his care.[a]
Today, if you hear his voice: (Psalm 95:7 CSB)

We are under God’s care, of His pasture, our scripture says. It may not always feel like that. But the operative part of today’s scripture is the first line: For he is our God.

So why the reference to being a people of His pasture?

Well, the first part is ownership. But the more important part is for us to think about what an owner does for a flock or heard. He tends them, he takes care of them. God wants us to know that we are of his flock and that He will take care of us.

I write on this often for two reasons. It comes up a lot in the Bible. If something comes up often in the Bible you can be sure that God wants us to hear it. Additionally, it is easy to feel alone in this world. Even with close friends and family, we often isolate ourselves. We can do so until we do not feel a part of anything. But we never lose our inclusion of being in God’s pasture.

I think this concept comes easier to someone who grew up around farming and ranching communities. I can see how someone who has lived their lives in the city may not see it in this way. But even in large cities, where we can become isolated because we are just another nameless face in the crowd, God calls us His own. He calls us out of the crowd and singles us out to be part of his pasture.

You are never alone, for He is our God.
