33 But seek first the kingdom of God[a] and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. (Matthew 6:33 CSB)
I have been thinking a lot lately on where my path is taking me. What God wants of my life and how I need to finish my race strongly. But I have been so caught up in the doing of life that I have had little time for being.
What is the difference in being and doing?
Well, first off, we all get very wrapped up on doing life. It can be hectic and just the simple act of getting all of our work and family responsibilities done often consumes every waking moment. As such, doing becomes the hallmark of who we are. We are doers.
Being is very different. It is about being present in every moment. It is about transcending our work and our responsibilities and slowing down a bit. Presence is such a huge deal and yet today we are less present than ever. Part of this is that technology has not delivered on its promise of easing our lives. In fact it has done the opposite and made them more hectic. I miss the days where we could be together without the interruption of notifications.
When we become all about doing and forget how to simply be, we lose a part of ourselves. Others lose what we can be for them as well. But most importantly we lose a key component that God looks for in our lives. We lose being the person He made us to be in all of our doing.
Being does not mean that the doing stops getting done. But it means that in doing so we are making a choice to be present in our doing. Yes, it may mean that a little less gets done each day. But it means that we are not losing pieces of our selves every day in all of our doing.
