Sustenance, Meaning and Favor

8 The wicked prowl all around,
and what is worthless is exalted by the human race. (Psalms 12:8 CSB)

Consider for a moment all the things in your life you consider as having worth. Categorize them into the things that sustain you, the things that give your life meaning and the things that you look to with favorably.

You see, pretty much everything in our lives can be separated into these three categories. At the most basic level we need certain things in our lives that provide sustenance, things that help us survive. Then there are the meaningful things in our lives where we tend to put our time and treasure toward. Lastly, there are those things we look favorably upon but really are somewhat the fluff of life and while not absolutely necessary are still very much a part of our lives.

Now, gauge all three categories against God’s filter. He will want us to have what sustains us and, in fact provides a path to those things. As we move into what we count as meaningful to us we have to search a bit deeper to really understand what of these things are actually give meaning to our lives in God. Lastly, it is true that many things we are fond of are probably less important to God, but He allows in our life. The true gauge is when we begin to realize what is worthwhile to the human race is often worthless to God. They exhaust the worthless.

We need to strive to live above this and filter things in life through God’s worthiness filter.
