10 Those who know your name trust in you
because you have not abandoned
those who seek you, Lord. (Psalm 9:10 CSB)
Abandonment issues abound in today’s society. There are many different causes for this and many variables that come into play in each life that leads to the feeling. Even some of our greatest saints have gone through periods where they have felt abandoned by God. But rest assured this is never the case.
I think the first thing we must ask ourselves when we begin to feel this way, especially toward God, is what is driving our feelings. Could it be that we are coming off of a period where we have actually abandoned God first? Where we realize that we have not really done what we should to feel close to Him?
Too often this is the case. What we are feeling stems from our own selfish abandonment issues. We know deep within us that we abandoned Him first and now feel distant. We created the situation but are putting it back on God and our emotions are pointing the finger in the wrong direction.
But, luckily, the Lord does not work like this. He is ever watchful, waiting for the prodigal son or daughter to return. He is continually preparing the feast in hopes of our return. Ever sending His love our way in hopes we will turn away from the world and away from our selfishness and see that the abandonment we feel is created within.
