12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. (1 Corinthians 2:12 CSB)
My dad used to say, “You better understand how your bread gets buttered.” Meaning, I need to understand who makes things happen, and how they happen. There are those things we do for ourselves, many more that others do for us and even more that go unseen handled by God. Our employer butters our career and paycheck bread. Our family and friends butter our relationship bread. But God spreads his butter on every part of our lives.
I know this may seem like a funny analogy, but it is apt. We need to understand that there is so much in this life we have little to no control over. If God were leave us alone and not spread his grace and mercy over it all we would be creatures of chance. But chance really does not play a part. Your life has been designed and is guided by God. Yes, we have free will to not accept His guidance, but it is ever there to fall upon when we need it, and in all honesty we need it a lot!
Purpose in life is a basic necessity we all have. Too many people get to a point where they say “is this all there is?” I have been there and it was not until I really looked heavenward that I realized the futility of a life lived only for worldly possessions and worldly desires. Living only for ourselves is such a singular and shallow existence. Life is far greater than our simple lives. In fact I would go so far as to say that life does not open up until we open up to God’s plans for it. In this lies true understanding.
