7 When a person’s ways please the Lord,
he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. (Proverbs 16:7 CSB)
Is it a possibility to find a total and lasting peace? I think first we must determine what we can expect in regards to peace, because we are still a fallen people living in a fallen world. It is Adam’s curse we still live under and as such our expectations must be set first.
But peace can be something we find in God and in how we approach life in general. It is true that when our way’s are those of a peaceful person, one focused upon God and living out our faith, we can expect that there will be a certain peace we find. The problem is that we too often link peace with security and happiness and this may not be the case.
I studied martial arts for many years and while, at its core, it is all about fighting in truth it is actually much more about how not to fight. At least the good schools taught this. Peace, in this way, came from knowing what to do, what you were capable of, and never needing to use it. God wants us just as prepared with His Word. It is always there for us, a sword to be used, but one steeped in love much more than war.
When we are capable of wielding any power like these in love we find that even our enemies can be at peace with us. It too is that when we have this confidence in God we find a deeper kind of peace in our lives, a peace that surpasses understanding.
