A Contrary Life

4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart’s desires. (Psalms 37:4 CSB)

Probably one of the most prayed prayers is that of God giving us the desires of our heart. And He wants to do so, if they are in line with His desires. Far too often the desires of our heart are not in line with God’s desires. They are selfish, or they are shortsighted. They focus upon the momentary while God is focused upon eternity. More than anything He desires a close, intimate relationship with us.

When we begin to pray that God’s will in manifest in our lives we begin to better see God’s true plan. We begin to experience what God has in mind not just for the moment, not just for our lifetime, but for those He puts in our path and their lifetime.

Our role on earth is not to make a lot of money and live comfortably. It is to do the will of God and to live according to his plan. The problem is that we see how that manifest in the lives of the disciples and suddenly do not want to live the possible life of a martyr. We do not want to live a life that may land us in prison or get us beaten. Luckily, living a life for God in this day and time will probably not mean such severe conditions.

But we do see the lives and morals of Christians coming more and more under attack. Being in line with God puts us out of line with the world. It means that we are set apart and as such we cannot live the way the world wants us to live. We will live a contrary life. That does not mean we have to be contrary, but our life will be contrary to the world. We must live this contrary life with love, and as much as possible, at peace with others.
