Cancelled (in a good way)

14 He erased (cancelled) the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:14 CSB)

There is much said today about the cancel culture we live in. If someone or some group does not like what another individual or group stands for they work hard to cancel them.

But the cancellation we should be focused on is how Christ cancelled our sin. Through His sacrifice He erased the certificate of our debt, our sin.

I have added the word cancelled to our scripture today both for emphasis and because some translations use this word instead of erased. But unlike the cancel culture of today, Christ cancellation freed us from the obligation of sin. And what is that? Simply, death.

Now, we all know there is no getting out of the fact that one day we will die. However, Christ provided an avenue through His salvation to allow our sin’s to be atoned for so that we may enter heaven. Not spending eternity in hell is a pretty big deal.

Unlike today’s cancel culture, Christ’s cancellation is one of great joy. He paid for us in full. No matter what we have done or will do, Christ blood covers all. Not that we should go on sinning, but that we have been atoned for and that sin erased from the Book of Life.

Thus, our remaining role here on earth is not to cancel others, but to find ways to show them how their debt of sin can be erased through Christ. In this way our acts are not one of subtraction but one of addition.
