The Passenger

2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
a Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a Spirit of counsel and strength,
a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:2 CSB)

We do not give a lot of thought to the Holy Spirit who lives within us when once we come to the saving grace of Christ. But our scripture today provides insight to the many things that The Sprit brings to our lives.

Aside from all He brings to our lives, it should be a sobering thought that He is experiencing our lives alongside us, the good and the bad. Consider if in everything you did you truly considered not just that God knows what you are doing but that the Spirit is inside and experiencing exactly what you are. Now, the question arises that God cannot be part of sin, what happens with the Spirit when we sin?

The Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. This promise we can fully rely upon. But do we want to grieve the Spirit with our weak fleshly actions? I think not. We should live our lives wanting to do what is right and live in a godly way. Part of this is recognizing that more than just doing good, we should be compelled to consult the Spirit within on what we plan to do. I mean, much like a passenger in a vehicle, don’t we want to have some say in where we are going?

I simplify this relationship too much here, but you get my meaning. For if we are not continually consulting the Spirit within, then we are probably taking counsel from the ruler of this world.
