13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed. (Ephesians 1:13 CSB)
There may be one definition of the word “sealed” but there are various connotations about how it is used. It could be that you seal an envelope to be opened soon afterward when someone receives it. You could put a date on when you want something sealed to be opened. Or a thing may be sealed for all time. But today the definition of our word means that we are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when we first believed. In other words, we are His and nothing can change that.
But what exactly does it mean to be sealed with the Holy Spirit? This seal communicates ownership, protection, and a validation of the relationship. It says that we are God’s and He is ours. He will never leave, nor forsake us. And in the end we will be in heaven with Him.
When we are sealed in this way we have been given a great promise, a great gift and a great responsibility. We are not meant to be sealed and left to sit, unopened on a desk somewhere. Our lives are be active in our faith and responding to God’s call and direction in our lives.
Consider the great gift you have been given and the great responsibility you have today in being sealed in Christ.
