21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols. (1 John 5:21 CSB)
I have written many times, that where we dedicate the majority of our time, talents and treasure is where our heart is. This too can be where we set up idols as well. Often we sink much time and treasure in that which we idolize. Work too can become an idol, where we sink all of our talents and use none of them for God.
This verse begins with “little children”, because in many ways that is what we are when it comes to these things. We must be taught a different, better way and until we mature into it, we speak and act as children. We must be taught how to property use our time, talents and treasure.
Additionally, like little children we need to guard ourselves against that which can drag us away. It is so very easy to get lured away by the sultry voice of the world. We listen to its siren song and stumble head-long into every kind of sin.
Thus, we must begin by standing strong with Christ at our side, praising the Father above and begin guided by the Spirit within.
