Salve for the Worried

18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,”
your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy. (Psalm 94:18-19 NIV)

Life can often find us slipping down and having to try to catch ourselves, metaphorically. This can create great anxiety within us and make life very difficult. During these difficult times scripture tells us that God will support us with His unfailing love when we do begin to slip. However, having had anxiety and depression, I know that it often feel like we are alone, especially in the dark of the night.

Psalm’s is the salve for a worried mind and heart.

Often when I find myself in such a state I will just sit and sift through the Psalms. There is so much contained in this one book that one could literally read it daily and get something new every time. I think this is why most monastic societies recite the Palms daily and I too pepper my regular reading with the Psalms.

The Psalm’s, like much of scripture, take time to pour through and gain the insight God is speaking to us each day. Today’s simple two lines from Psalm 94 are unique within that chapter. The rest of that chapter is mostly about the proud and arrogant, and focuses a lot on punishment. But within those lines God’s heart comes through in these two verses.

Much is to be mined from scripture that a cursory reading may not give us.
