65 Lord, you have treated your servant well,
just as you promised.
66 Teach me good judgment and discernment,
for I rely on your commands. (Psalm 119:65-66 CSB)
Psalm 119 is about my favorite Psalm. There is so much value packed in that no matter how many times I read it I get something new out.
Like today’s scripture, on the surface it is about thanksgiving and reliance. But on a deeper level it is about promises and commands. Even in just two lines of scripture we are given a picture of how God works.
In these two lines we see that if we rely upon God’s commands, he rewards us with good judgement and discernment. These are two weighty values to add to our lives. Yes, good judgement on the surface serves us well throughout life, but also having discernment means that that judgement is keen in nature. It sees beyond the superficial and to the heart of the matter.
God’s treatment of us, thankfully, does not rely upon us. It relies fully upon His promises to us and not our ability to “be good”. Because, in truth, there is no good in us. But God is gracious and merciful toward us and His treatment is beyond fair.
Unpacking scripture and really getting all of the value from every word should be the beginning, middle and end of every day.
