20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!” (Mark 11:20-21 CSB)
The scripture surrounding the withered fig tree is rife with meaning. Jesus with the clearing of the temple and the cursing of the fig tree was providing an abject lesson to the apostles. He was both speaking against the Jewish leaders and to all who do not produce fruit.
Look, we all have jobs to do and we are all busy. But what do we put first in our lives? And while reading scripture and praying are all good things, just because we do it first thing in the morning does not mean we put God first in our lives.
The hallmark of where God exist in our lives is in the fruit we produce. I have written on this many times, because it is such an important part of our faith lives. Maybe you are tired of being asked about it. But it is a question we should all wrestle with.
God wants us to seek a balance in life, which includes Him and not just all of the stuff we have going on. He wants to know that He and our Salvation mean enough to us that we desire to see others come to Christ. That we are actively pursuing Kingdom work and understand how important it is so that none may perish without hearing the Word.
The fig tree represents many things, but the fruit point to one thing in particular.
