18 With whom will you compare God?
What likeness will you set up for comparison with him?
19 An idol?—something that a smelter casts
and a metalworker plates with gold
and makes silver chains for? (Isaiah 40:18-19 CSB)
To what do we compare God?
Our money? Our things? Our success? Our families? Our power?
Everything pales in comparison. Everything in this world is fleeting, everything is temporary. In this world we are at the whims of the flux of everything around us, being blown this way and that.
Only in God do we find any permanence, any surety, anything of value.
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, Solomon wrote and it is just as true today.
We do not like to see our world this way, so we store up, and the market tumbles. We work out to keep our selves healthy, and then we get the diagnosis. We build relationships, pouring ourselves into them, and people walk away. Our idols fail us time and time again.
But when we put each foot in front of the other in step with God we can be assured that he is working everything to His good will. Even if we cannot see it. So keep your eyes up and your heart strong, for if God is for us, who can stand against us.
