Relentless Love

But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 CSB)

There is a book I have read many times by Brennan Manning called “The Relentless Tenderness Of Jesus.” Brennan is not only a great writer but was such a common man’s theologian.

The title is what drew me in first because you do not typically see the words Relentless and Tenderness paired up. As I was doing some other reading and reflection this weekend another odd word pairing came to mind; Relentless Love.

You see, what I am realizing as I get older, study scripture deeper and let God in closer to my life is an interesting byproduct. As I allow God to love me more, I love others more. And yes, it has become a relentless love. It has mellowed me and taken a once very hard edge and has continued to round it.

I now find my sinfulness and my brokenness, more often than not, in the failings of others toward me. What I mean by this is that when I am frustrated or angered by another and I really think about my motives behind my feelings I see my own pride and sinfulness.

I believe this is because of the relentless love of Jesus. The more I am connected to him the harder it is for me to do anything other than love others. The other thing this does is to set the enemy back on his heels. The spirits he sends to separate us cannot stand in the light of Jesus love flowing through us.
