11 When I considered all that I had accomplished[a] and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and a pursuit of the wind.[b] There was nothing to be gained under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 2:11 CSB)
I have chased the wind. Whether that be on the back of a motorcycle or bicycle or with many other pursuits in life. I have found pleasure in many of these things, but in the end did I catch the wind?
Solomon writing in Ecclesiastes can seem a condemnation of every kind of pursuit. But in reality it is about the futility of pursuit without God as our foundation. There is nothing new under the sun. We like to think, especially in the technological age we live in, that many things are new. But everything fulfills some basic human need or desire. If we are innovating for anything else then this is truly folly.
So how do we make life more meaningful and not reach that inevitable point where we ask, ”is this all there is”?
By seeking first the Kingdom of God.
When we begin every pursuit with God in focus and in the center, all of our activities begin to have meaning. Now, you may say, why do I need God in everything? If I only want to pursue a hobby, I do not need God in this! But are you involved in it? If so, as a believer, you bring the Spirit along. God created interest in our minds for many things. Do you think He would have done this to then not be interested in our pursuit of it?
While we may be masters of compartmentalizing our lives, God compartmentalizes nothing. He is everything and is in everything.
