Yes or No

37 But let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one. (Matthew 5:37 CSB)

Have you ever encountered someone who spoke endlessly but really said nothing.

Then you have the internet that has sucked us into so many circular arguments. Often with those who really have no basis for the argument to begin with.

There is a simpleness in today’s scripture that holds great wisdom. Let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes, and your ‘no’ mean ‘no’. Too often we get involved in debates that, in truth, just need a simple answer.

I also find it interesting that this scripture goes on to tell us where “anything more” comes from. I believe this speaks to our pride, to our need to be heard. A humble heart does not need to expound upon it’s own views.

I believe too, this is why the message of Christ is so clear. He said “yes” to the cross and in doing so said “no” to our dying in our sin. He gave a simple “yes” to loving us and a firm “no” to the enemy’s power over us.

It is only up to us to say “yes” to Him.
