5 It is not that we are competent in[a] ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God. (2 Corinthians 3:5 CSB)
Adequacy and competency are two traits we tend to all hold in high regard. Especially when we view these as strong personal traits. When we do, we use them as measurements against others as well which is maybe not such a good thing. Often our view of ourselves can be skewed and higher than it should be.
This is not to say that we may not be adequate or competent in many areas. But we should ask ourselves where this comes from. Too often it comes from pride and not a humble view of our capabilities.
It is when we only view these traits as gifts God has given us that we can truly begin to understand them as a measurement. And even then we must remember we do so from what may be an inflated view of ourselves. God not only gives us the capability but He also provides the ability.
This is why it is so very important to retain a humble view of our selves and know firmly where these traits come from.
