Everything Loss

More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3:8 CSB)

We all put so much value in to the things we own or those we are with. It is human nature to do so and there is nothing, necessarily, wrong with putting a value to things and valuing people.

However, our scripture today tells us they are all a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ. Meaning, even that which we hold of highest value is not nothing but actual loss by comparison.

When we take a true assessment of the surpassing grace and glory of knowing Christ we can see how this would be so. Nothing we own and no one we know can offer us eternity. But Christ offers it freely.

Furthermore, a movement toward this thinking helps us to really understand what actions hold value upon this earth. How we too have a part to play in bringing this surpassing joy and value to others. How we too can show others daily just where our true treasure resides.

It may be hard to see everything as loss, until we put it in this light.
