The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good. (Ecclesiastes 9:17-18)
There is nothing worse than reading about the fall of a strong Christian leader. Too often it is too some sexual sin but, just as often, to some other vice.
This, of course, happens in all walks of life. However, the ruined testimony of a Christian can have a deeper impact. Furthermore, if they are in the spotlight it just provides more fuel to the fire for those against religion. Hence, one sinner destroys much good.
St Francis said, “Preach the gospel always, use words when necessary.”
This is good advice on multiple levels. We are always on display and how we act, in relation to our testimony is under scrutiny. Our words are ever more so listened to and tested, as they should be. People should test all things through scripture.
We must guard against “destroying much good” and act and speak accordingly. I have written on this many times because I believe it to be of paramount importance.
