7 That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[a] 8 For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.” (Luke 7:7-9 CSB)
Back in the days of the Roman Empire being in middle management held a much more stringent set of responsibilities and expectations. A Roman soldier would not hesitate in carrying out an officer’s order. The consequences would have been severe had he not.
Thus, when this Centurion asked Jesus for healing of one of his highly valued servants he did not feel worthy to come to Christ. He only asked, and had faith, that like himself as a leader Jesus only had to say the word and his servant would be healed.
This showed not only great faith but great respect and expectation that Jesus was who he said he was. We too can come to Christ with great faith, respect and expectation that he will too work on our behalf.
