Cussin’ Mad

30 Then Saul became angry with Jonathan and shouted, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you are siding with Jesse’s son to your own shame and to the disgrace of your mother? (1 Samuel 20:30 CSB)

We typically see scripture only as this holy tome filled only with church like stories, sayings and instruction. However, when read deeply it is so incredibly human.

This passage, and the ones that follow it for part of this chapter are effectively a father cussing out his son. Yes, there is within the story a deeper spiritual message. But it too is about our humanness and the fact that we get mad and fly off the handle. At one point a bit later Saul hurls a spear at his son. That’s mad.

But God is bigger than our anger. He knows we are human and he is able to contend with that humanness. Through Christ the holy trinity know what it is like to be human. Christ threw a fit when he found the money changers in the temple and tossed all their stuff about.

When we read scripture with an eye to both the message contained within and within the humanness of the people who lived and wrote it, we better understand how God connects with us.

Even when we are cussin’ mad.
