Said No One Ever … Except

71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 The law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of coins of gold and silver. (Psalm 119:71-72 NKJV)

We like to use the phrase, “Said no one ever”, when talking about something that is obviously unpalatable or maybe incredulous. However, the Palmist does exactly that. He is happy in his affliction and without gold and silver.

Why? Because he has found something better.

We look upon anything that does not make us better as being generally bad. But scripture resounds with promises that God often uses our afflictions to make us better. Let’s face it, we often need something stark to happen before we stop and take notice of our true situation. It could be that God is just getting our attention or it could be that He has something grander in mind, a bigger change that He knows we need to make to realign with His plan.

We need to consider that our view of life may not always provide us a proper view of the path God has planned for us. We tend to get so focused upon the life we want that we take little time to ask God about the plan He has for us. This especially holds true for difficult times.

Reflect on: Your current situation and ask God what He truly wants for your life.
