Sunday Reflection: Exponential Growth

The early spring, rains and mild temperatures have brought exponential growth to my yard and plants. Everything is verdant and exploding with color. We typically, here in Texas, get a short season of this before it gets so hot that everything gets burned up by the heat and we struggle with even keeping the grass watered and in a state of heat exhaustion.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, (2 Thessalonians 1:3 NKJV)

Our faith tends to grow like this early on in our walk, then it either settles into a slow growth or, possibly, a slow stagnation. We need to especially guard against the latter as this often tends to be peoples faith walk. I know that might sound harsh, but I have watched it happen over and over again.

It would be great to constantly feel exponential growth, but it is more realistic to expect our initial fervor to settle into a steady state of growth. But for this to happen we have to continue to pray and study the scriptures. We cannot hope for any growth if we are simply going to church once a week to sit in a pew and sit and soak. We need to be soaking each and every day, seeking God’s continual revealing of scriptural truths. This only happens with a desire for more from God.

Reflect on: How your faith walk has been. Is it one of continued growth or, if you are honest, simple stagnation?
