12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12 ESV)
When we sin there is a guilt that we feel that may go well beyond the act of attrition and humbling of ourselves before God, asking for forgiveness. This is the human condition. We continue to ask for forgiveness because of guilt even though God has already removed our transgressions as far as the east is from the west.
If we continue in our sin we can begin to convince ourselves we are unforgivable. God wants us to stop sinning, make no mistake. But He is faithful to forgive us. Scripture even goes on to say that we should, like our Father, forgive others not once or twice, but seventy times seven. He does not use this calculation to provide a finite number of times, but to exhibit His infinite grace and mercy.
Our sins are forgiven, past, present and future, and we should both go on and strive not to sin but know that if we slip up God has us. Christ blood washes us clean and removes our sins. It is up to us to accept this free gift of salvation and to then work on our lives and strive to be as sin free as possible.
