Help my Unbelief

21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[a]and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:21-24 ESV)

At times we need to cry out, like this father, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Some piece of us is a hold out in these situations. Whether our faith is lacking or we just need some way to bolster our belief, we need to cry out to God and ask for His help.

This is not necessarily sinful, it is simply accepting the fact that our faith is weak. We are searching within and not finding the strength we need and are, rightfully, reaching out to God to provide something more, something we do not at that moment possess.

I believe, in these situations, God will often take pity on us and reach out His loving hand to lift us up. Thinking that we can somehow make the leap from unbelief to belief may not be enough. We need God’s helping hand.

So when you know you believe, but your belief is weak, do not hesitate to call upon our loving Father. He is far closer than we realize.
