Called and Equipped

16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[a] I will build my church, and the gates of hell[b] shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:16-18 ESV)

We began watching season 4 of “The Chosen”, a series I cannot recommend highly enough. The last episode we watched portrayed the above scene where Peter states exactly who Jesus is. The other disciples had given answers regarding who others thought Jesus was, but when put on the spot about who they thought He was, Peter was first to voice that Jesus was the Christ. It was a powerful scene.

Jesus then goes on to make a bold statement regarding Peter and His church. The remainder of the episode tracks Peters concerns over this revelation about the church and the other disciples frustration around their positions.

Arn’t we all like this. Either we are given a direction, or a role, we feel came from God and then we have concerns about it. Or we see others given a lofty position and we are envious and wonder what we should have been given. So it ends up with us having concerns on fulfilling a role or of us not feeling like we have a role.

Being human is hard, frustrating and, at times, confusing.

Jesus wants nothing more than to give us a role in His kingdom building. But we need to put our pettiness aside and accept the role He has given us and know that He equips those He calls. We can let our petty concerns fall away and just accept what He has called us to do.
