The Key

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. (Revelations 3:7 ESV)

The key of David is believed to be the key to the stronghold of Zion which Joab snuck in and took so he could open the gates for the Israelite army to take the city. This ultimately became the city of David, to which Christ became the ultimate key.

There is much more to the story and history here that is quite interesting. However, in our scripture the key is metaphorically used to reference Christ who holds the power to open or shut the door for us into heaven. Ultimately meaning He is the only way through which one gains access to salvation and heaven.

This is important to understand because so many believe that just being a good person or doing right things will gain them admittance. They believe that a loving God would not turn anyone away. But our loving God gave us the key in Christ and expects that we accept His death and resurrection, and believe so that we may gain access through Him and no other. Especially not our works.

The Key is the way, the truth and the life. Only through Him do we gain entry.
