O Dayspring

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. (John 1:9 NIV)

From my reading this morning; “O Dayspring” Originally meaning the dawn of a new day, the term [scripturally] refers to the illuminating presence that God’s Word brought to the dark and formless world.

As I watch the day, literally spring to life with the dawn I find the above both enlightening and inspiring. I had heard the reference to Christ as “Dayspring” but had not researched its origins until it came up this morning. This is where doing a bit of research into the meanings of certain words or phrases can be of great value. Not only does it increase our knowledge but it can also provide a special insight into God.

For me, knowing this term and origin, I can face each dawning day with a new appreciation. Understanding that God has given me yet another day here to live for Him, but also providing a visual reminder each morning of what Christ has done for me and the world. A reminder that He is the light of the world.

Christ is our Dayspring, and he offers each new day for us to begin anew if we have been falling short. The light of each new day dawns new possibilities and prospects for us to live in a new way. We are called to be His light in this dark world.
